In Oklahoma and nationally, rates of tobacco use among Native American youth and adults are substantially higher than any other subgroup. The disparity is not well understood, but is likely related to both individual and community-level influences. This project is developing a model for assessing and building capacity for tobacco programs in Native American communities, and is a collaborative effort between the Native American Prevention Research Center (NAPRC), Native American communities in Oklahoma and the Native American Tobacco Coalition of Oklahoma (NATCO).
The NAPRC is working with tribes to assess the extent to which their communities have the infrastructure, ability and desire to collaborate for tobacco prevention and control activities. Through its close relationship with NATCO, the NAPRC has also worked to mobilize and develop leadership to bring about an understanding of the way tobacco is viewed in Native American communities and foster the exchange of ideas concerning tobacco-related programs.
These efforts have resulted in a heightened awareness of and interest in tobacco issues unique to the Native American communities. This presentation will describe these recent innovations in tobacco use prevention and control by the Oklahoma NAPRC and NATCO.
