In 1998, the Vermont Department of Health, in collaboration with the Vermont Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the Vermont Chapter of the American Academy of Family Practice (AAFP), the Vermont Office of Health Access (state Medicaid agency), school nurse representatives, mental health providers and dental providers, published Health Screening Recommendations for Children and Adolescents called “The Periodicity Schedule”. This process coincided with an expanding managed care environment and helped to bring all payers to focus on standardized preventive health care for Vermont’s children.
The Periodicity Schedule was developed following a comprehensive review of nationally accepted preventive health recommendations, Early Periodic Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment requirements, published evidence-based practice standards, and related state and school health policies. During this process it was recognized that a companion resource toolkit would be valuable for supporting health professionals’ efforts to put the new standards into practice. As a companion to the Periodicity Schedule, the Provider’s Toolkit was designed to help health professionals make its use both efficient and effective. The toolkit has sections for convenient retrieval of important information that will routinely be updated and supplemented. The names of primary care providers and school nurses who receive a Toolkit are registered in a database to enable the routine distribution of updates information.
A committee of Vermont health professionals continues to guide updating of the Toolkit. This presentation will demonstrate the process and actual materials utilized statewide in Vermont to provide consistent, comprehensive health care for children and adolescents.
