There is increasing global momentum to scale up postabortion care (PAC) training and services to meet the international mandate outlined in the United Nations 1999 Five Year Review of Progress Since ICPD paragraph 63iii. Cooperating agencies (CAs), NGOs, donors and host-country partners have more than 10 years of field experience with the implementation and evaluation of PAC services and increasingly see the need for a client-centered, continuum of care approach. With changes in service delivery models, there is a need for training methods and tools that reflect and facilitate the implementation of these models. As countries launch these scale-up efforts, they will need improved training and service delivery models and materials to achieve universal local access to voluntary contraception and safe and accessible postabortion care services.
In the past year, Ipas has developed a comprehensive training for transformation approach to launching the new MVA Plus (modified MVA instrument), which includes a training vision statement, staff training development, updated and expanded PAC training tools, global trainers network and enhanced training and service delivery monitoring and evaluation system. The aim is to provide country programs and collaborating agencies with the skills and tools they need scale up PAC services. The training for transformation launch is being thoroughly evaluated. Preliminary evaluation results and recommendations for broader implementation will be presented.
