During the past year, the VA reorganized its medical system into 22 integrated networks of care that are focused on pooling and aligning resources to best meet local needs in the most cost-effective manner and provide greater access to care. While providing high quality health care to the nation's veterans, the VA also conducts an array of research activities concentrating on some of the most difficult research challenges facing medical science today. The VA has become a world leader in such research areas as aging, women veterans' health concerns, AIDS, post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health issues. The VA’s research has improved medical care not only for veterans but also for the population in general. The VA has an HIV/AIDS service whose mission is to provide comprehensive care to veterans infected with HIV and to have that care recognized as the standard by which all HIV/AIDS care in the US is measured. This includes all patient care activities, clinician and patient education, prevention activities, and research directed at continuous improvement of medical and preventive services and delivery of care to veterans living with HIV. The needs of women veterans are also being addressed, those women veterans' services within and outside the department on an ongoing basis, to assure that the VA policy and planning practices address the needs of women veterans and foster VA participation in general Federal initiatives focusing on women's issues. This paper will evaluate the issues of HIV/AIDS and domestic violence in the veteran population and then the researcher will evaluate how these issues are addressed in patient education programs and materials.
