There are over 25.5 million veterans of military service living in the United States. Approximately 10% of this population actually utilizes health care programs provided by the US Department of Veterans Affairs(VA). This indicates that an overwhelming number of veterans of military service receive their health care from private providers. Additionally recent changes in the VA Health Care system have increased access to care by private providers on a fee for service basis. There are many occupational and environmental hazards associated with military service that effect the health and welfare of veterans and their families. Recent studies have demonstrated that birth defects in children born to veterans are associated with exposures associated with military service. This presentation is designed to educate policymakers, public health agencies and individual providers about the importance of identifying veterans of military service in their patient populations. An instrument for assessing military assignments and potential exposures which may effect the diagnosis and treatment of veterans and their families will be included in the session
