Turning Point’s Leadership Development National Excellence Collaborative, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in 2000 for four years, is a multi-state collaborative whose mission is to “increase collaborative leadership capacity across sectors and at all levels.” The collaborative, comprised of representatives from seven Turning Point states and national partners, after carrying out research in collaborative leadership and developing products for use in enhancing collaborative leadership, is challenged by questions of how to incorporate collaborative leadership skills and practices within public health activities. The Leadership Development Collaborative, in defining future work, has posed challenging questions. These include: what is the environment that supports and sustains collaborative leadership in local and state public health systems; does collaborative leadership differ in local, state and national public health; how is collaborative leadership incorporated in the curricula of schools of public health; how can the work thus far of the collaborative be used and incorporated in systems to improve community health? APHA participants will be called upon to discuss these questions.
