Managed Care and Public Health are seldom seen together as willing partners. Managed Care has long been touted as the panacea for providing inexpensive health to the masses and reducing the skyrocketing costs of healthcare. Public health is considered a means of providing health care and education to the poor and disenfranchised.
Usually the two are considered to be diametrically opposed, since managed care is provided to people who can pay either through their jobs or government programs and public health is usually directed at those who cannot pay at all.
Managed care can actually be used to supplement public health programs and vice versa, thereby increasing the care that is available to the poor and increasing the number of people in managed care plans.
Public Health programs and agencies can be used to provide vital information to managed Care plans on health issues and needs within the communities they serve.
Managed Care plans and public health agencies can find common ground work together in assuring the maximum quality or care and services are provided to people in their respective catchment areas.
