In response to the growing need for culturally competent health care, the Jefferson Health System employed the methods of photo novella to create health education materials for urban Chinese Americans that are both linguistically and socially appropriate by including community members in the creation process. Information from focus groups conducted in the same community indicated a lack of knowledge in the area of how to handle emergent situations and how to use the 9-1-1 emergency system. Five Chinese women from the community were recruited to assist with the creation of a storyline, translation, photography and development of a pamphlet to assist the Chinese community in accessing emergency services. The photo novella was pre-tested in the Chinese community to evaluate the following: their opinions about the photo novella format, their thoughts on the material’s content and dialogue, and finally their opinions on the usefulness of the material. Additionally, the findings will determine the feasibility and usefulness of the Emergency Services photo novella in reaching other Asian groups in the same urban setting.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will be able to list the steps involved in the photo novella process.
• Participants will be able to articulate the value of the photo novella process in developing educational materials for non-English speaking populations.
• Participants will be able to recognize the significance of involvement by community members in designing health education materials created for the community.
