Abstract #47520

Legal and policy strategies to overcome religious restrictions on access to reproductive health services

Lourdes A. Rivera, National Health Law Program, 2639 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034, 310-204-6010, rivera@healthlaw.org

This presentation will focus on legal and policy strategies that are being developed to address barriers to reproductive health services caused by religious restrictions imposed by sectarian health providers and health systems. Federal laws will be discussed, including protections in Medicaid and Medicaid managed care, as well as state laws, such those addressing contraceptive equity, unfair business practices, illegal corporate practice of medicine, and property. Establishment of women's health quality standards and quality monitoring and enforcement also will be discussed as important elements of legal and policy initiatives. Participants will be able to identify strategies which they can further develop and implement in their states to ensure that patients' needs for reproductive health services are met.
