The San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) was awarded funding under the federally funded Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative. ETR Associates is the local evaluator for this project. Through the Initiative, SFUSD is establishing comprehensive plans to address: safe school environments; alcohol and other drug and violence prevention; school and community mental health programs; and safe school policies. The Initiative is working specifically with seven high schools and ten elementary schools in an ethnically diverse urban district.

As part of the evaluation, student outcome data has been collected annually from the participating schools in order to measure change in health-related behaviors and attitudes including substance use, self-esteem, safety, and violence. Part of the data analysis found a significant relationship between mental health and substance use. The survey results are shared with the district and school sites to guide grant-related health programming and improvement of service delivery goals for site staff and students.

Learning Objectives:

• Participants will be able to articulate the relationship between youth resiliency scores and risk behaviors in a large and ethnically diverse urban school district.
• Participants will be able to identify key stakeholders with whom to share the data to ensure its use in program planning.
• Participants will be able to list 5 possible methods for sharing the data with stakeholders to ensure its use for guiding program planning.
