The purpose of the project was to integrate a community development approach into community-based efforts to reduce tobacco use by developing a guidebook on building and maintaining community coalitions. Based on observations during technical assistance encounters with community coalitions, university faculty conducted informal group interviews with experienced health department staff and other community members to confirm the need for a quick, relevant reference guide to building and maintaining coalitions for tobacco use prevention and cessation. A vision for the guidebook emerged from the interviews and an outline/format was created. Community voices were the foundation of the guidebook, as operationalized by “Ideas from the Field.” Tobacco Prevention Coordinators from local health departments submitted their ideas and experiences to illustrate and expand the content throughout the guidebook. The product, “Growing People: Building and Maintaining Coalitions for Tobacco Use Prevention and Cessation,” will be showcased. The joys and challenges of using a community-academic partnership to build infrastructure for tobacco control in a state disproportionately affected by tobacco use will be discussed.
