The SS/HS National Evaluation is designed to assess the initiative’s progress in promoting healthy childhood development and create safe learning environments. The initiative focuses on six domains: school safety; safe school policies; education reform; alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD) and violence prevention; mental health; and early childhood development. This session will focus on baseline findings relevant to key public health issues including violence, mental health, and ATOD use. This presentation will highlight findings from the SS/HS Wave 1 surveys conducted in Spring 2001. Teacher and principal surveys were conducted in all 77 SS/HS sites, resulting in completed surveys from 4053 teachers and 1226 principals. Student surveys in grades 7, 9, and 11, and teacher ratings of specific students in grades 1, 3, and 5 were conducted in a random sample of 13 SS/HS sites, resulting in 18,176 completed student surveys and teacher ratings of 5,378 students. Findings will be discussed in the context of school type (elementary, middle, high) and location (urbanicity and region of the U.S.). The presentation will also address the degree of concordance among student, teacher and principal surveys. Findings will also be compared-- where appropriate-- to national averages of like data (e.g., YRBS data).
