In 1975, the World Health Organization published a document, “Education and Treatment in Human Sexuality: The Training of Health Professionals” that was pioneering in its effort to set sexuality issues squarely in a public health context. However, the public health challenges related to sexuality have evolved and become more urgent in recent decades. WHO, in association with the World Association of Sexology, has been working to: I. Reaffirm that sexual health is an essential element of normal sexual development, II. Reach accepted, revised definitions of terms such as sexuality and sexual health, and III. Consider service delivery issues related to sexual health. This presentation will report on a technical consultation held in January 2002 and on the follow up that has occurred since then. It will include: a) Draft definitions of key terms, b) Issues raised regarding the sexual health needs of women, men, young people and groups with special vulnerabilities (refugees, those with HIV/AIDS, etc.) c) Longer term plans of WHO to better address and provide guidance on sexual health in a public health context.
