The Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative (SS/HS) requires local communities to demonstrate the existence of partnerships/coalitions that would provide guidance and leadership toward the implementation and sustaining of the Initiative. These partnerships/coalitions represent the foundation of the SS/HS Initiative´s overarching model and programmatic intent. The purpose of this presentation is to 1) provide a brief description of the conceptual frameworks guiding the National Evaluation´s analytic approach; 2) provide a general description of the SS/HS partnerships, and examine how specific characteristics impact perceptions of functioning and formation; and 3) examine how SS/HS sites have attempted to integrate services within their local community. Data collected from approximately 700 partnership members and 77 project directors across 77 Cohort 1 & 2 sites will be presented to examine various aspects of local SS/HS partnership formation and functioning and service integration. Two conceptual frameworks will be used. The first focuses on an “open systems” approach to examine the dynamic interactions and characteristics among stakeholders that contribute to successful collaboration and implementation of programmatic policies and activities. The second assesses the degree to which the SS/HS sites have integrated services in a comprehensive approach, and the strategies employed toward that end. Preliminary analysis suggests that partnerships are configured in multiple forms and are using multiple strategies toward implementing the goals and objectives of the initiative. Salient aspects of these partnerships include the role played by and significance of law enforcement and mental health participation with local education agencies to successfully implement this comprehensive initiative.
