Abstract #46702

Medical abortion in a primary care setting

Linda W. Prine, MD, Department of Family Medicine, Beth Israel Residency in Urban Family Practice, 16 E. 16th Street, New York, NY 10003, 212-924-7744, Lindaprine@earthlink.net and Marji Gold, MD, Social Medicine Residency in Urban Family Medicine, Montefiore Family Health Center, 3544 Jerome Avenue, Bronx, NY 10467.

Medical Abortion services have been integrated into many family medicine practices in the New York City area. Unlike abortions offered in specialized clinics, patients coming to the family practice centers during the period reported on in this paper were only able to get medical abortions, as performing surgical abortions required filing changes in the operating certificates of the centers with the State of New York. The medical abortions in these practices resulted in a very high success rate (greater than 99%), with suction procedures occurring only rarely. This paper will describe the protocol used for these medical abortions and discuss the possible reasons for the high success rate.
