This presentation highlights the work of the researchers in a NIOSH funded Small Business Innovation Research Grant, to develop a Web-based cost-savings portal for small businesses (titled “Small Business Safety Officer”) to integrate pollution prevention, worker safety and health, and cheaper and safer production alternatives into their business process. Compliance and information needs are determined through an interview process. Software wizards then launch Employee and Administrative Websites containing tools and content tailored to the company occupational and environmental safety and health requirements. The program also creates a general access safety web page to provide all employees with important occupational and environmental health and safety information.
Development of the SBSO under Phase II would include the incorporation of process alternative and cost savings advisors; the expansion of tools and advisors for chemical toxicity and ergonomics; and the integration of established databases with automated searching to allow safety and health and pollution prevention information to find the users. Ultimately, a training program would be designed and offered by the University of Massachusetts Lowell (The Toxics Use Reduction Institute) to support the product.
