Background: Disparities in health care access and health behavior exist among immigrants living in USA. Asian women immigrants in particular are at risk for numbers of chronic diseases related to their health risk behavior.

Objective: To examine the health status and risk behaviors among Vietnamese women living in Santa Clara County of Northern California.

Study design: A cross sectional random-digit dialing telephone survey was conducted.

Methods: The sampling frame consisted of 27 Vietnamese surnames from a state telephone directory. 660 adults aged 18-64 were interviewed to collect information on health risk behaviors that included general health status, alcohol and tobacco use, HIV/AIDs, sexual behavior, injury control, hypertension, cholesterol screening, and cancer screening.

Results: Of the 660 adults, 364 (55.2%) were male and 296 (44.8%) were female. 15.5% (95% CI: 11.4, 19.7) did not have a physical check up during the past 2 years and 34.8% (95% CI: 29.4, 40.2) never had their cholesterol checked. The proportion of women who never had a Pap test was 13.4 (95% CI 8.5, 17.5). Among women aged Ан40 years, 11.6% (95% CI: 6.6, 16.7) never had a mammogram. The majority of women who had their cholesterol checked, pap test or mammogram had those as a part of their routine physical check-up.

Conclusion: The data suggest the existence of high-risk behaviors such as not having routine physical and blood cholesterol check-up among Vietnamese women living in Northern California. Never getting a Pap smear test was highly prevalent.
