As the second nationwide survey of its kind, the "Young Adolescent Fertility Survey II" (YAFS2) conducted by the University of the Philippines Population Institute in 1994 collected a wealth of sociological information on 10,879 Filipino youth aged 15 to 24. Among other information, YAFS2 collected data on the incidence and nature of alcohol and drug use among Filipino young adults. While these are widely acknowledged to be serious problems among today's youth, much remains unknown about alcohol and drug use patterns among contemporary youth, particularly those in developing countries like the Philippines. As such, this paper aims to, first, establish some influential socioeconomic and demographic correlates of these two non-sexual risk behaviors and, second, examine how these various behavioral correlates link to alcohol and drug use. It is anticipated that research findings will help formulate more responsive public health programs and policies that will help fight against these two major risk behaviors among young adults.
