Chris L. Day, MPH and Ron Bialek, MPP. Public Health Foundation, 1220 L. Street, N.W. Suite 350, Washington, DC 20005, 202-898-5600 ext 3017, cday@phf.org

The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice is committed to assisting the U.S. Public Health Service to implement components of The Public Health Workforce: An Agenda for the 21st Century report pertaining to public health competencies. To this end the Council developed a list of core competencies for public health professionals. The list was compiled from various source documents and cross-walked with the Essential Public Health Services. This cross-walk ensures that the competencies help build the skills necessary for providing the essential services. The list was made final and approved by the Council’s 15 member organizations in April 2001.

Since their inception, the core competencies have been used to varying degrees by public health agencies and organizations which develop education/training programs for public health professionals i.e., the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Public Health Training Centers, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Centers for Public Health Preparedness and other academic programs. Specifically, the competencies have served as a guide to develop and enhance academic curricula, and training programs. They have also been used to conduct needs assessments and to evaluate the effectiveness MPH programs in preparing students for practice.

This presentation will highlight many of the current and potential uses of the core competencies in academic settings. In addition, the presentation will discuss ways to promote the use of the core competencies for workforce development initiatives.
