Although successful evidence-based asthma interventions have been developed and implemented, there remains a gap between what we know about the effective approaches to asthma self-management and what is actually being practiced in the general public. To bridge this gap, widespread dissemination of effective approaches is needed. To address this concern, we developed a model that provides a systematic guide for the following activities: modifying and updating the intervention protocol; developing an evaluation plan; identifying competencies and developing training curricula, as appropriate; and developing a dissemination approach to facilitate widespread use of the protocol and associated materials in the public health setting. We describe a collaborative effort that focuses on the translation of two pediatric asthma education programs: a program for parents of children with asthma and an educational program for asthma care providers that utilizes a team and organizational approach to the training. We present the conceptual framework that provides the basis for the same strategies that were used to conduct the translation activities for both programs. Additionally, we report on the development of an evaluation plan that emphasizes process and impact measures in contrast to long-term outcomes. We also offer examples of how the translated protocols and materials can be widely distributed to both the public health and private practice sectors via traditional hardcopy and web-based formats.
