Three samples - STD clinic patients, providers and hepatitis experts - were asked to list core concepts that are essential to include in hepatitis prevention educational materials. The Delphi technique (for providers and experts) and central intercept interviews (for patients) were methods used to collect the first-round data. Within each sample, the recommended concepts were summarized into categories by intended audience (patients or providers) and hepatitis type (A, B and/or C). During a second round of data collection, using the Delphi technique and Web site surveys, patients, providers and experts were asked to rank each concept in order of importance for inclusion in all hepatitis prevention educational materials. Based on these rankings, frequencies were calculated, and concepts scoring above the mean were retained as comprehensive “core concepts.” A list of concepts that are often mentioned or explained will be presented, as well as concepts that typically are not mentioned or explained but should be included in all educational interventions, including print, electronic, or counseling. Implications for public health educators, counselors and clinicians will include a practical list of comprehensive core concepts that can be used to develop or to evaluate any type of hepatitis prevention educational intervention for patients or for providers. Recommendations for future research include investigating how to craft the core concepts into effective messages for preventing hepatitis in specific high-risk audiences.
