This session will discuss the actions that the American Psychological Association(APA) is taking to assist its practitioner members with the new requirements for HIPAA compliance, particularly with respect to the privacy rules promulgated in April 2001. Special focus will be given to the unique mental health and substance abuse issues confronting the psychologist members of the APA.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to

1. Identify the key issues of the HIPAA Privacy regulations
2. Define the privacy exceptions for national defense and emergency and public health interests
3. Identify the key concerns of mental health professionals
4. Describe at least two administrative actions required for compliance
