In response to a call for proposals from the Bexar County Community Health Collaborative faculty from The University of Texas School of Public Health, The University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio School of Nursing, and Our Lady of the Lake University worked together to propose a community assessment that would use skills housed in each of the participating partners based on a modified rapid appraisal methodology. The modified rapid appraisal methodology uses input from a community review committee to help identify community priorities for health issues. Extant data is collected regarding a wide array of community and health indicators including those identified by the community review committee. Survey data is collected to obtain information about the community and behavior responses to health concerns. In the final stage of the assessment process, key informants interviews and focus groups are conducted to help understand community values and priorities related to the health concerns identified in the earlier data collection stages. Assessment information is available for geographic areas within Bexar County. Healthy People 2000 goals are presented for all indicators for which they are available. Trend data are available for 1995, 1998 and 2000 for each indicator. In addition comparison data for Texas and another major metropolitan Texas County help provide a context for rates within the county. A chart/databook of indicators will assist key informants and focus group participant as they consider community priorities.
