Abstract #41260

John Aberle-Grasse, MPH and Kenneth G. Keppel, PhD. NCHS/Division of Health Promotion Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 6525 Belcrest Road, Rm 770, Hyattsville, MD 20782, 301-458-4493, johna@cdc.gov

The Healthy People 2010 Leading Health Indicators were selected on the basis of their ability to motivate action, their importance as public health issues, and the availability of measurable data. The 10 Leading Health Indicators are measured by 22 Healthy People 2010 objectives. Healthy People 2010 set as its second goal eliminating health disparities among U.S. population subgroups. To address this goal, a method for measuring the status of disparity in population-based objectives is being developed. This session will discuss the methods developed for measuring disparity in the context of eliminating health inequities regarding these health indicators. In doing this, the concepts of measuring disparity particular to Healthy People 2010 will be articulated. The use of specific disparity statistics will be illustrated and their support of the Healthy People initiative evaluated.
