Abstract
Objectives: This project will evaluate the quality of the Temple University Foot and Ankle Institute Advanced Wound Healing Center by measuring quantitatively the preclinical and clinical education of third podiatric medical students, patient education and comprehension of diabetes and diabetic foot disorders, and current patient compliance to self-care after direct patient education.
Methods: Student education before and after diabetic educational seminars will be assessed, patient knowledge before and after patient education will be assessed and patient compliance to self-care will be assessed to determine the quality of care for patients with diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers in a wound healing center.
Results: This project will analyze data of the student education by t-test analysis of pre-test and post-test diabetic educational seminars and an repeated measures ANOVA of previous two tests versus post-clinical rotation; analysis of patient education by t-test analysis of patient diabetic education from pre-test and post-test; analysis of patient compliance by comparison to medical charts on appearance and healing of diabetic ulcers.
Conclusion: Effective preclinical diabetic educational seminars for podiatric medical students may enhance patient care, patient education about diabetes and diabetic foot care may improve patient knowledge of diabetes and increase patient compliance to self-care. Instituting these methods to Temple University Foot and Ankle Institute Advanced Wound Healing Center may improve quality care for diabetic foot ulcer patients. This model may be used in other areas of medicine in order to enhance patient care and quality assurance in a medical setting.
