The Deep South Network for Cancer Control is a program that is absolutely “Putting the Public Back into Public Health”. From the training programs, development of cancer awareness materials to pilot research projects, the Community Health Advisors trained as Research Partners (CHARPS) in Alabama and Mississippi are involved in all aspects of this project. The overall objective of the Deep South Network project is to establish a sustainable community infrastructure in order to promote cancer awareness, increase cancer screenings, enhance African American participation in clinical trials, promote the development of African American investigators and develop innovative community-based cancer control measures to effectively reduce the mortality gap between African Americans and Caucasians. The program targets two poor, rural areas – the Black Belt of Alabama and the Delta of Mississippi; and two urban areas – Jefferson County, Alabama and Forrest/Jones County, Mississippi. The University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Southern Mississippi, Jackson State University, Tuskegee University and the University of Alabama work together on this project.
