Grimes v. Kennedy Kreiger Institute is a case that has caused much discussion and concern among individuals who conduct research with children. Indeed, some believe that this case will curtail, and even forbid, certain types of important research from being conducted. Because this case involved environmental health scientists it has particular relevance to public health researchers. Grimes is a complicated case that has many historical antecedents. It is important that public health researchers understand this case, particularly the reasoning behind it. It is also importantthat their legal advisors and legal academics have an opportunity to discuss this case.

Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to

1)Articulate the legal issues relevant to research with children, especially as they pertain to "nonbeneficial" research.
• Analyze arguments for and against the inclusion of children as research subjects.
• Distinguish between "beneficial"and "nonbeneficial" research.
