Objective: To develop a stages-of-change measure for general sexual risk for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections based on the SOCRATES 8-D. Simultaneously, to translate this instrument into Spanish. Method: We substituted references to sexual behavior for the references to the drug taking behavior in the SOCRATES items. We pilot-tested the instrument in the field with English-speaking gay men. The instrument was revised, based upon the results of the pilot test. The revision was translated into Spanish and reviewed by several expert translators. An independent translator back translated the revision. A translation committee resolved the differences to create a final product. Results: A pilot 48-hour test-retest reliability study of the Spanish version of the instrument is ongoing. The validity of the instrument will be assessed by answers to the Spanish version of the Risk Behavior Assessment. Conclusions: Having a Spanish version of this instrument will be a valuable contribution to the public health effort with Latinos at risk for sexually transmitted infections.
