This poster session is an overview of a grant-funded injury prevention project developed by the Chester County Safe Kids Coalition. The overall goal of this program was to reduce unintentional injuries and fatalities, and to increase student awareness about injury prevention. Thirty fourth-grade students from the Greenwood Elementary School attended a 16-week interactive after-school training program, instructed and lead by coalition members. Each week students learned about a wide range of injury prevention topics, such as gun safety and fire safety. After the twelfth session, participants were grouped into teams that focused on their selected area of interest. These teams then developed a mini-presentation that was conducted in a health fair style to the entire third-grade student body. The program was evaluated using a pre-and post-test tool measuring knowledge. The results of the post-test demonstrated a 30% increase. In addition, a participant evaluation reflected a positive response to the overall program. Because this program was so well received by the students, faculty, and parents, the program has been replicated and implemented at the Nottingham Elementary School beginning January 2002. The results of this program will be completed May 2002. After viewing this poster session, conference attendees will gain ample information to design and implement a similar peer health education program within their communities.
