Folate, vitamin B12 consumption and serum and erythrocyte level in women living in the US-Mexican border city of Tijuana, Mexico

The incidence of NTD in Mexico is 36 per 10,000 births, ranking Mexico in second place worldwide. Multiple studies have provided evidence that inadequate maternal folate status is associated with a higher incidence of NTD. The purpose of this study was to estimate the folate and vitamin B12 intake and blood levels in women of childbearing age. Included in the study were 34 women, employed in the banking industry in the US-Mexican border city of Tijuana. Nutrient intake was reported by the women using a 5-day weighted food record (WFR) , in addition to a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Fasting blood samples were taken for serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations. The mean folate intake from the 5-d-WFR was 211 ± 171 ìg/day and 233 ± 78 ìg/day from the FFQ. Pearson correlation was 0.79 (p <0.0001). The mean intake of vitamin B12 from the 5-d-WFR was 2.67 ± 2.18 ìg/day and 3.2 ± 1.3 ìg/day from the FFQ. Pearson correlation was 0.30 (p <0.05). Vitamin B12 mean serum levels were 919 pg/day. Overall, in this population, 54% of subjects had inadequate folate intake (<200 ìg/day). The foods with higher folate contribution from the diet were cereal, orange juice and beans. The 5-d-WFR was a good predictor of folate serum levels; FFQ was a good predictor for folate intake. Vitamin B12 intake was inadequate in 26% of women (<2.0 ìg/day). Forty-eight percent of the women had folate serum levels <5 ng/ml. These data suggest an increased risk for NTD in these women.
