Abstract #35777

Creating a National Directory of Accessible Physical Activity and Recreation Programs

William J. Schiller, PhD, National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD), University of Illinois at Chicago, 1640 W. Roosevelt Road, Chicago, IL 60608-6904, 312-413-1536, wjschill@uic.edu

The National Center on Physical Activity and Disability (NCPAD) believes that exercise is for EVERY body. Having a disability does not mean that persons with disabilities cannot be healthy. NCPAD’s mission is to encourage and support persons with disabilities who wish to increase their overall level of physical fitness by participating in all types of physical activity. NCPAD offers a variety of resources to help persons with disabilities become more active such as fact sheets, monographs and searchable directories that catalogue resource information on physical activity and disability. NCPAD’s online searchable directory of accessible physical activity and recreation catalogues programs and facilities for persons with disabilities across the U.S. NCPAD has developed a survey to create accurate and more in-depth profiles of each program catalogued in the directory. The survey identifies 18 crucial elements, including: contact information; activities offered, such as skiing or sled hockey; population(s) served; program focus, such as aerobic training, softball or canoeing; professional training and certification of the staff; and, adaptive equipment. This research represents the first national, population-based survey of fitness and recreation programs in the United States. This systematic annotation will provide detailed information on the 18,000 programs and facilities in the directory, making it the first and most comprehensive directory of accessible physical activity and recreation program and facilities. Once this information is compiled, it will be published as a resource guide for persons with disabilities and professionals and made available in virtual and hardcopy formats.
