Abstract #33555

What is the latest research in nursing? - A collaborative approach for learning between BSN nursing students and practicing nurses

Richelle A. Rennegarbe, RN, PhDc, Nursing, McKendree College, 10557 County Highway #6, Addieville, IL 62214, 618-424-7930, jrrenne@midwest.net

BSN nursing students developed a poster presentation regarding research findings for a selected therapeutic nursing intervention. Topics utilized to select the student’s intervention included: pain, fatigue, incontinence, dyspnea, dementia, confusion, depression, anxiety/distress, spiritual distress, gait disorders, constipation, diarrhea, nausea & vomiting, sleep alterations, violent behavior, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Poster presentations provided an opportunity to acquaint BSN students and their audience with the fundamentals of the latest nursing research quickly and easily. The posters were designed to (1) catch the viewer’s attention, (2) quickly acquaint the viewer to the basics of the subject, and (3) make the viewer want to learn more regarding the particular therapeutic nursing intervention. Students displayed their poster presentations and were available to explain the research findings at local health care facilities at a pre-determined date and time. Posters were then left in place for a specific period of time for unavailable nursing staff to view at their convenience. Students’ posters included: patient care symptom/problem area; nursing interventions used to address the symptom/problem; a brief review of the literature regarding the scientific merit of the intervention; a summary of recommendations for using the nursing intervention; and suggestions of patient conditions that would benefit from the intervention. The poster presentations were a win-win situation that contributed to the knowledge level of the students as well as community nurses. This project has been well received by students, health care administrators, and local practicing community nurses. It has facilitated a broadened perspective regarding the importance of nursing research.
