| Mental Health Policy at the Crossroads: Looking Forward and Back Over 40 Years |
|
In 1961 Dr. Bertram Brown began his federal career at the Kennedy White House. Two years later he joined the young National Institute of Mental Health, serving as director from 1970-78. He has continued as a leader in public mental health ever since retiring from NIMH. Mid-way through Dr. Brown's final year Dr. Howard Goldman joined NIMH, where he was imbued with Dr. Brown's commitment to leadership in public mental health. Dr. Goldman was Assistant Director of NIMH from 1983-85 but has spent most of his career in academia, as a grantee and consultant. Most recently he served as the editor of Mental Health: A Report of the Surgeon General. Both have played key roles in shaping the direction of federal mental health policy in science and practice for most of the past 40 years.
This session will focus on how the public mental health system has developed and where it is going. Drs. Brown and Goldman will review major landmarks and trends during their careers. Dr. Goldman will update us on what has happened since the publication of the Surgeon General’s Report, and they will both discuss what the future will bring. They will also receive an APHA Mental Health Section award in recognition of their years of public service. Dr. Ronald Manderscheid will moderate the session. |
