A number of major challenges continue to threaten women's health across the globe, including the HIV/AIDS epidemic, maternal morbidity and mortality, and reproductive health issues. This session will analyze: 1) the current impact of those problems on women's health; 2) changes since the landmark International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo in 1994 and the Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing in 1995; and 3) measures to ensure the effective implementation of the Cairo and Beijing agendas. A human rights perspective will be emphasized and used in developing an action plan for the future.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1) describe the impact of HIV/AIDS, maternal morbidity and mortality, and reproductive health concerns on the health and well-being of women and families across the globe; 2) appreciate the significance of the Cairo and Beijing conferences; and 3) illustrate how a human rights perspective can be used to advance the implementation of the Cairo and Beijing agendas.
