Oral Session |
| Universities and the Health of the Disadvantaged |
|
Universities have a potential to stimulate progress towards more equitable societies. Some believe that all universities, regardless of their status as public or private institutions, have a moral obligation to engage in service to disadvantaged communities. However, rarely is this stated as an explicit mission of the university. This session will have two parts. Part I will describe UNI-SOL
(Universities in Solidarity for the Health of the Disadvantaged), an exciting project that emerged from a global conference in July, 1999, sponsored by WHO,UNESCO and the University of Arizona to address the issue of "Universities and the Health of the Disadvantaged." Criteria for selecting universities from a global applicant pool to receive grants will be presented. Part II will discuss community service in medical education, a required vs. an elective part of the curriculum. The organization and content of one school's community service program will be presented. |
