Abstract #33068

CDC’s Global Infectious Disease Strategy

Stephen Blount, Director, Office of Global Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, , n@a

CDC’s collaboration with international partners to address health concerns beyond US borders is longstanding. In the area of infectious diseases, this role is expanding, as illustrated by its major roles with polio eradication, HIV/AIDS, and diverse international disease outbreaks. Recognizing that the U.S. accrues multiple benefits from this work - protecting the health of U.S. citizens, achieving economic and diplomatic gains, furthering U.S. humanitarian efforts, and enhancing national security - CDC has developed a Global Infectious Disease Strategy to guide its efforts in the coming years, with a continued emphasis on working in partnership with other global and national institutions. The Strategy includes the following priority areas: 1. International Outbreak Assistance 2. A Global Approach to Surveillance 3. Applied Research on Diseases of Global Importance 4. Application of Proven Public Health Tools 5. Global Initiatives for Disease Control 6. Public Health Training and Capacity Building
