Abstract #32981

Why Occupational Health and Safety Professional Need to be Involved in Efforts to Create a National Health Plan

Anthony Mazzocchi, 510-525-6421, batesong@pacbell.net

Local ballot initiatives sponsored by the Labor Party's Just Health Care campaign in Massachusetts and Florida and by Physicians for National Health Care in Cook County show that over two-thirds of Americans support a health care system that provides comprehensive universal care and replaces health insurance companies with a public fund.

Though this panel, we hope to begin discussions within the OSH section of APHA to create a model for the optimal delivery of occupational health services for workers that could be incorporated into a national health insurance plan. Such a model would include disease surveillance and research and health services for diagnosis and treatment of job-related injuries and illnesses. We realize there is a vast amount of experience in the section and invite everyone to join the discussion.
