Issues such as violence, aggressive behaviors, substance abuse, and related problems among high-risk children, youth, and families have complex etiologies that require carefully crafted, long-term approaches. Such approaches need to simultaneously address individual, environmental, and systemic factors in a strategic fashion. The first paper will provide a brief overview of Safe Schools/Healthy Students (SS/HS), the unique program initiated by a collaboration among the Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, and Justice.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this symposium, the participant will be able to: 1) Recognize the complex nature of violence as a public health problem; 2) Describe the key features of the SS/HS Interdepartmental Initiative.
