Although much of the intimate partner dating violence has focused on college age students, there is a growing awareness that partner violence occurs at much younger ages. Consequently, there is a need to not only assess the prevalence of this problem but to begin to identify appropriate interventions for high school and middle school students. The Arts Based Iniative for the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls is a project that builds on a collaborative initiative between an urban development organization, Schools of Nursing and Public Health, a shelter for battered women, and three middle schools in an urban setting. This presentation discusses the findings of six adolescent focus groups in the three schools addressing the topics of healthy relationships, experiences with violence, and suggestions for prevention. Emergent themes will be presented and discussed with implications for public health highlighted.
