Sitting at the Table: Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues Provides Guidance for CMHS National Advisory Council

The Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)created the "first ever" Subcommittee on Consumer/Survivor Issues. The Subcommittee advises the CMHS National Advisory Council on activites and policies. This session introduces the members of the Subcommittee and the recommendations presented to the Council so far. Key areas for research and advocacy projects will be examined, including 1) housing; 2) employment; 3)civil rights; and, 4) culture, race, and ethnicity. General information about history and selection of the Subcommittee will be presented. Informationsl materials relevant to CMHS and the Subcommittee will be distributed. In its capacity as a fact-finding body, the Subcommittee will solicit advice and discussion from participants in this session as a guide for future activities.

Learning Objectives: Participants in this session will: 1. Identify at least three key issues for research and public policy from a consumer/survivor perspective. 2. Have contact names and information of Subcommittee members in their region. 3. Construct priorities among areas for future CMHS initiatives to propose to the Council.
