The aim of this paper is to present network analysis to assess the inter relationships of network providers related to certain processes including referral patterns, sharing of client information and system planning. The objective of this paper is to present baseline data on the mental health system structure that could be assessed over time using three specific network analysis measures. This includes:
Density: a measure of how providers are connected Centrality: a measure of how providers are tied within the network and, Prestige: a meassure that distinguishes between choice made and choices received by providers
The paper describes instrument development including the use of two surveys for both the adult and child and adolescent system of care. Participants included all traditional mental health providers as well as related oversight, advocacy, general health and social service agencies.
Findings for both adults, child and adolescent surveys indicated that both systems are cohesive and few providers were "disconnected" from the network. The adlult system of care was better than the child/adolescent system in terms of coordination and involvement of appropriate agencies. Density indices for the two systems of care indicate that highly speicialized services are used by a narrow segment of the population in the adult system than in the child/adolescent system. Additionally, there is more involvement among ehtnic providers in the adult system than in the child/adolescent system. Both systems differ in terms of prominence (importance) across providers in the network. Data suggests there is greater differences in prominence across agencies of the child/adolescent system than the adult system.
Learning Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to inform participants on the use of social network analysis to assess the mental health system of care.
