Accidental deaths of undocumented migrants attempting to cross the southwestern border of the United States without inspection by U.S. immigration officials account for a large proportion of such deaths of non-resident foreigners in U.S. counties at or near the border. Our research examines the changing profiles of accidental deaths of foreign transients in border counties between 1985 and 1998, compares to patterns of accidental deaths for U.S. residents in the same environments, and looks at the relationship between profiles of accidental deaths and changing United States border enforcement policies.
