The purpose of study was to investigate the predictors that related to intentions to remain abstinent or use condoms and reported abstinence or condom use behaviors among Asian American adolescents (AAAs). The study was grounded in the Theory of Reasoned Action and Self-Efficacy Theory. The participants were 84 AAAs recruited from area high schools and a church in Queens. Ninety four percent of participants were predominantly Chinese (50%) and Korean (44%). The participants completed a 210-item self-administered questionnaire at home or church. The major predictor variables were acculturation, attitudes, subjective norms, self-efficacy, and demographics. The outcome variables were intention to abstain and condom use and abstinence behaviors and condom use behaviors. Multivariate stepwise logistic regression analyses showed that predictors associated with abstinence intention were living with both parents (OR=3.9, p=.0861), direct abstinence attitudes (OR=15.5, p=.0002), and indirect abstinence subjective norms (OR=4.7, p=.0261). From the bivariate logistic regression analysis, predictors related to abstinence behaviors were not having a partner (OR=42, p=.0005), direct positive abstinence attitude (OR=28, p=.0019), positive abstinence intention (OR=17, p=.0001), indirect positive abstinence attitudes (OR=7, p=.0190), indirect positive abstinence self-efficacy (OR=6, p=.0083), living with both parents (OR=5, p=.0205), direct positive abstinence self-efficacy (OR=3, p=.0602), and younger age (OR=.44, p=.0311). Predictors influencing intention to use condoms were direct condom use attitudes (OR=16.5, p=.0098) and indirect condom use subjective norms (OR=8.9, p=.0678).
Learning Objectives: 1) To describe the predictors that related to intentions to remain abstinent or use condoms and reported abstinence or condom use behaviors among Asian American adolescents (AAAs), and 2) To describe an application of the Theory of Reasoned Action and Self-Efficacy Theory
