A continuing concern of many in the public health community is that there is no professional group of peers dedicated to the issue of public health practice research. The Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice was especially concerned about the lack of existence of such a group because:
1) there is an increasing need and desire for public health practice research; 2) there are existing and new journals focusing attention on public health practice research; 3) a support mechanism is needed for the small number of individuals conducting public health practice research; and 4) development of methods for conducting public health research is needed.
The purpose of the Public Health Practice Research Forum would be to promote the understanding and conducting of public health practice research. The Forum would address ways to attain the Healthy People 2010 Objective, “Collaboration and Cooperation: Establish and implement an ongoing system that facilitates greater collaboration and cooperation between public and private agencies conducting population based prevention research and ensured community input and participation in research efforts,” and strive to develop measures for monitoring progress towards achievement of this objective.
This session will focus on the issues stated above and it will serve as a follow-up to the CDC meeting held May 9 and 10, 2001 which focused on public health services research.
See www.phf.org/Link.htmLearning Objectives: 1. Discuss the purpose of a public health practice research forum. 2. Articulate ways to promote the understanding and conducting of public health practice research. 3. Identify priority public health practice research questions.
