In August 2000, the NYC Department of Health embarked on a project to integrate its childhood lead test registry (Lead Quest) and its Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR) as a first step toward creating a comprehensive child health record to facilitate surveillance and information sharing among providers. A variety of challenges were encountered as this project unfolded along a number of dimensions, including: 1. Technical: Selecting appropriate component-based middleware to implement as open and flexible a system as possible given a heterogeneous computing environment. 2. Organizational: The challenge of integrating two program staffs and three different software vendors into an efficient team while recognizing differing work styles and philosophies. 3. Operational: The challenge of doing an integration while “business as usual” continues at a fairly large scale.
Members of the project team will discuss these challenges, their effect on the project, and strategies used to overcome these challenges.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants will be able to 1. Identify a variety of challenges that were faced by New York City in its integration of childhood lead and immunization registries. 2. Discuss strategies for overcoming these common challenges.
