Abstract #31839

Public/Private Coalitions – Successes in Global Health

William H. Foege, MD, MPH, Rollins School of Public Health of Emory University, 1518 Clifton Rd., NE, Room 730, Atlanta, GA 30022, , wfoege@sph.emory.edu

Public/Private Coalitions have moved from co-sponsoring meetings and free commodities to a range of programs. In some cases corporations are providing commodities and participating in programs to distribute the commodities. Private service organizations have become full partners in global projects, as demonstrated by Rotary International and polio eradication. Even research has benefited as funds are commingled to underwrite basic research in exchange for reduced profits if commercial products are developed. The vast range of experiments now underway provides promise of improved benefits for poor people in poor countries.

Learning Objectives: 1) Identify diverse organizations that are working together to promote public health; 2) Describe programs and projects being undertaken as collaborative efforts among organizations; 3) Explain the benefits of partnership in achieving measurable improvements in global health.
