During the past 5 years, a tremendous amount of knowledge has been gained about effective tobacco control interventions. The presenter will summarize the evidence of effective interventions in relation to the Healthy People 2010 objectives on tobacco control, from four primary sources: (1) Reducing Tobacco Use: A Report of the Surgeon General (US DHHS, 2000); (2) Strategies for reducing exposure to environmental tobacco smoke, increasing tobacco-use cessation, and reducing initiation in communities and health-care systems: A report on recommendations of the Task Force on Community Preventive Services (MMWR 2000; 49(RR-12): 1-11; (3) Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence. Clinical Practice Guideline (US DHHS, June 2000); and (4) Best Practices for Comprehensive Tobacco Control Programs (US DHHS, 1999). Also, the presenter also will identify current public health strategies for which data on efficacy is insufficient and needs for additional research
