The inclusion of disability in the national public health agenda has allowed states to focus attention on the ways that disability can be included in local, regional, and statewide planning and goal-setting. The congruence of a national, state, and local community public health and disability agenda fosters a partnership that can substantially enhance the health of people with disabilities. This includes the use of healthy people as part of the process for “institutionalizing” disability in the state and local health activities. This presentation will address the ways in which state and national plans can influence one another. Attention will also be given to the data issues that emerge from using the healthy people process. Finally, emphasis will be given to how interventions to address Healthy People 2010 objectives can be framed in the states. Collective efforts of state disability and health program are the mechanism by which Disability and Secondary Conditions objectives will be achieved.
Learning Objectives: Participants will understand the ways in which local, state, and national partnerships are developed so that data and interventions for addressing Healthy People objectives can be implemented.
