This presentation will discuss the organization and results of the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB)’s reactive chemical hazard investigation conducted as a result of CSB’s Morton International, Inc. incident investigation. As a part of the investigation outreach efforts, key stakeholders were involved in the investigation planning and implementation. The investigation surveyed incident data sources to determine the number and impact of reactive chemical incidents. Through site visits and surveys, information was gathered about reactive chemical hazard management for select small, medium and large companies within the chemical industry. OSHA and EPA also were surveyed to determine current regulatory approaches for managing reactive chemical hazards and to identify future agency plans. The board made recommendations designed to promote the safe handling of reactive chemicals. See www.csb.org
