The PNSS and PedNSS have monitored the health and nutritional status of low-income pregnant women, infants and children since the 1970's. While major changes in public health have occurred during this time period, these systems have changed little since their inception. In late 1998, CDC launched a comprehensive review to look for ways to improve the efficiency and utility of both systems. The resulting "Action Plan for Upgrading the PNSS and PedNSS" has guided improvements to the data processing architecture, data editing and analysis, and products including tables, graphics, data files, and exportable software. Reporting of data quality issues is being automated to facilitate rapid correction. Other new features include expanded analyses of clinic, county and trend data, easier readability of reports, and modifiable graphic presentation of national, state and local data. New Windows-based exportable software will permit contributors to produce their own PNSS and PedNSS reports on demand. The systems are being transferred from a mainframe to PC platform and include a faster data transfer interface employing CDC’s new Secure Data Network, a facility to provide controlled Internet access to sensitive CDC data and information systems. PNSS and PedNSS goals and objectives, and general enhancements to data items, editing, analyses, tables, graphics, and report production will be reviewed. Web and other access points for securing copies of national and state reports will be available.
